Prior to 1966, Bechuanaland was a virtually undiscovered territory,
explored only by the hardiest adventurers. The late Nineteenth Century saw
tremendous fighting between the indigenous Tswana tribes and the nomadic
Ndbele tribes of the Kalahari, all wanting to inhabit the rich land of the
Delta. A vast and expansive land of environmental extremes, the lush and
game rich Okavango Delta in the North West region contrasts starkly with
the beautiful Kalahari Desert that covers the remaining two thirds of the
country.
Our primary area of focus, the Okavango Delta, is the stunning climax of
Africa's third largest river, which begins its landlocked journey in Angola
and finishes in the sands of the Kalahari. It is an oasis of palm islands,
grasslands and papyrus filled floodplains making for one of the greatest
wildlife concentrations on earth, and hence the finest hunting grounds is
Southern Africa. The rest of the country is covered by semi arid bush land
mixed with mopane forest.
Botswana is home to the largest population of elephant in Africa, boasting
over 150,000 head of these grey giants which are our main quarry in this
land. |
